YouTube has played a huge part in the natural movement. For many on their natural hair journey, YouTube has been a great source of knowledge to find our hair care tips and lists of products that work well with natural hair. Whitney White, also known as Naptural85 on YouTube, has been a tremendous help for many Naturalistas and soon-to-be naturalistas on their journey.
YouTube launched in 2005 and since then it has given many people the opportunity to get their ideas and thoughts out on the Internet in video form. One random day Whitney decided to post a video on YouTube to show her transition from her relaxed hair to her natural texture and to thank the others on YouTube that inspired her to do so, but she ended inspiring others through her story. Since 2009 Whitney has continued to build her brand and encourage others on their natural hair journey.
Whitney was born in Rhode Island and is the youngest child of two. When she got older she got a degree in graphic design and did freelance work for multiple companies after she graduated. One day she discovered how much she liked her curly hair versus her chemically straightened hair and eventually decided that was how she was going to wear her hair from then on. Besides, she wanted to be set a part from everyone else and her natural hair definitely helped her stand out.
Whitney would spend hours in her bathroom coming up with different techniques and hair care regimens and soon she decided that she would record what she was doing so that she could help others!
Seven years later Whitney has over 650,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel with over 58 miillion views. In addition to her hair care videos she has expanded into lifestyle daily vlogs (DearNaptural85) and has her own website (http://naptural85.com). You can also find her on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/Naptural85Official/, and Instagram, @Naptural85, where she is constantly interacting with people and responding to comments!
The natural hair movement has been something that has grown so large it has impacted our society and companies everywhere. It started with a small number of people deciding to embrace their real hair textures and now so many people have joined the movement. The natural hair movement is much more than just hair itself, it is about self acceptance and realizing there is not just one standard of beauty. Whitney wins because she embraced apart of her true self and has helped countless others do the same.
